3 Startup Support For startups aiming for rapid growth based on innovative technologies and ideas, IP strategies are essential to compete globally. The JPO is providing support from multiple perspectives in order to promote the IP activities of startups. (i) Push-type Assistance Service for Startups for Patent Examination • The JPO proactively conducts outreach to startups and their agents to encourage the use of patent examination systems aligned with their business strategies and to help ensure the timely and appropriate acquisition of rights. (ii) Super-Accelerated Examination/Accelerated Examination Using Interviews for Startups (Patent) • While the existing super-accelerated examination requires that applications be both “working-related applications” and “foreign-related applications”, that for patent applications of startups may be requested if they are “working-related applications”. • For the patent applications of startups utilizing accelerated examinations, *11 the JPO implemented accelerated examinations using interviews with examiners, which will lead to the strategic acquisition of patent rights through interviews conducted prior to first action notification. • In 2025, there were 63 requests for accelerated examinations using interviews for startups. • In 2025, there were 834 requests for super-accelerated examinations for startups. (iii) Accelerated Examination for Startups (Design) • As of April 1, 2025, working-related applications for designs filed by startups have become eligible for accelerated examination and accelerated appeal proceedings.
